Thrombosis, Major Cause of Death in Hospitalized Patients - Expert

Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot, inside a blood vessel obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system.  When a blood vessel (a vein or an artery) is injured, the body uses platelets (thrombocytes) and fibrin to form a blood clot to prevent blood loss. (Wikipedia).

However, thrombosis is the major cause of death in hospitalized patients,  Head of the Department of Haematology, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan  Prof. John Olaniyi, said.

Prof. Olaniyi, while addressing the hospital management in celebration of the 2023 World Thrombosis Day; themed: Move Against Thrombosis; stressed that this year’s tenth anniversary aims to raise awareness worldwide on its prevention.

The Department of Haematology led by its Head, Prof. John Olaniyi said this during a courtesy visit to the management of the Hospital Under the leadership of Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, which was made public on the hospital Facebook page.

Prof. Olaniyi who stressed further that a thrombosis risk assessment is being carried out in the hospital, however called for a need to evaluate what is being done overtime so as to assess its impact and to scale up to a higher level.

 The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo while receiving the team at the boardroom of the hospital,noted the stance of Prof. Olaniyi to move from thrombosis to thrombolysis as a welcome development .

The UCH CMD stressed that focus should  be placed on thrombolysis therapy as it is been done in the world over.

Prof. Otegbayo assured the department of an unwavering support from the management.
