SFH Gives Technical Support to 18 Healthcare Providers in Ikorodu, Epe LGAs
This initiative targeted 12 trained providers in Ikorodu and 6 in Epe Local Government Areas as part of a concerted effort to expand access to high-quality family planning and primary healthcare services for underserved populations. The outreach efforts covered 15 political wards within these two LGAs.
The events encompassed a comprehensive range of services, including Malaria Testing and Treatment for children under five, Family Planning Services, Tuberculosis Screening, Pneumonia and Diarrhoea screening and treatment, Nutritional Counseling, Blood pressure and blood sugar level checks.
One notable innovative approach employed by these healthcare providers was their engagement with community leaders, women groups, youth associations, and religious leaders before the outreach. These advocacy visits were aimed at briefing them on the outreach goals and gaining their support. This strategic move ensured active community involvement, enhanced community awareness, and ultimately boosted the uptake of services offered at various outreach venues. The impressive turnout of community members seeking family planning and primary healthcare services from these trained providers can be largely attributed to the involvement of traditional, religious, and youth leaders within the community. Their active participation played a pivotal role in motivating community members to access these essential services.
Breaking down the family planning service uptake figures, a total of 1,600 individuals were reached during the outreach – out of these, 887 received family planning services and 864 received counseling specifically on family planning. The distribution of family planning methods included 13 oral pill users, 25 injectable users, 28 self-injection users, 160 individuals had implants inserted and 6 individuals had implants removed. Regarding primary healthcare services, the outreach served 688 sick children, 681 presented with fever, 3 with fast breathing, and 7 with diarrhoea. Seven children with diarrhoea received Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and Zinc tablets. Additionally, 581 children were tested with malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT), 35 of them tested positive and were subsequently treated with ACT.
The outreach event received support and technical input from the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (LSPHCB) and the Nigerian Association of Patent & Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED). This collaboration facilitated the successful implementation of the outreach activities across the communities in Ikorodu and Epe LGAs.
