Expert Wants Govt to Boost Research Funding
The Managing Director, Protogy Global Services Limited, Engr. Ademola Agooro, has called for increase in research funding, to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on petrol by the Federal Government.
Engr Agooro, while speaking on the theme "Insight for Thriving in Trying Times" during an empowering sunday service at the House on The Rock, Harvest House Ibadan, also expressed concerns about transparency in the utilization of the fund.
"when govt is talking about palliative, food is just a part of it, people eat food today and that is the end , no matter how much food you give them. But funding people who are interested in researching is the best, if you encourage people that want to do research in any area of life, it covers for all citizens".
"The problem in Nigeria is that most of this money have been syphon , look at Tetfund, is not that Nigeria do not have this fund, it is the utilization that forms the big concern, you need to make everything open , let everybody see it, there must be some certain criteria,
everything must be transparent, as long as things are transparent and people now see that you do not have to know anybody , people will come out of their shell".
"In researching, the first thing is the design, but the major problem is development, is development that requires money, for instance, if you want to make any research on food, let everybody see your design or your paper , sure you must have met the criteria before you move to the development stage, which requires every bit of monitoring, this is just a better palliative than given people money, food and any other thing".
Engr Agooro while encouraging christians participation in politics, advised well to do Nigerians not to wait till election period before lending helping hands to the masses
" Christians do not want to be involved politics because the politics of today is full of fight and using guns, but as christians, you can put your own structure in place through the leading of the holy spirit".
"If I am spending any amount of money, then I saw it as empowerment, we are not waiting till the time of election , if anyone wants to help people, why do we have to give them money, why not empowering them".
Speaking on the motive behind the empowering project coming up, Engr Agooro who is also the Vice President, Collaborations and Linkages,The Nigeria Society of Engineers said" We are settling up a vocational school in the village, not a vocational school to teach weldering work, carpentry work, but we are going to be offering Artificial intelligence training, robotics , data coding and the likes, it's going to be free for people".
"We are doing this to ensure people in the village have capacity to grow, just for people to develop and understand programme because Nigerians are very intelligent, just that they do not have access to some of the things needed".
"the major problem we have in Nigeria is that we are not a manufacturing economy , everything we do, we import, and the irony is that there is nothing we want in the world that is not resident in Nigeria".
