FGM: Experts Call for Increase Commitment to End Female Genital Mutilation


 
Stakeholders have called for increased commitment towards ending the practice of female genital mutilation and as well protecting girls who are currently at risk of the negative effects.

Oyo State Coordinator of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Mrs Balikis Olawoyin said this while speaking at a capacity building workshop organized by Hacey health initiative in Ibadan over the weekend.


Olawoyin who highlighted some long term effect of FMG , to be, infertility, Keloid, infection such as HIV and hepatitis B, among others, stressed further that the long term effect can results to prolong labour and in some rare cases leads to still birth.

The state coordinator who described the practice as partial or total remover of  the external female genitalia, called on the general public to say No to FMG.

Also, a legal practitioner, Barr. Adeoti Tolulope explained that the act of cutting the female genitals was punishable under the law, adding that anyone caught in the act will face the wrath of law.

Representing HACEY Health Initiative, Monitoring, Emmanuel Oni, said it was high time survivors of female genital mutilation join the crusade in ensuring that those to born in the future will be free from the dangers of the practice.
