NAWOJ gathers expert to tackle gender base violence
In the interest of thousands of people who are undergoing abuse in the corners of their room, relevant stakeholders on Thursday gathered to chat a course on how to address issues of gender base violence ( GBV) which occurs in every region of the world.
The Oyo State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in collaboration with Oyo State Ministry of Women Affairs and support from Living Word Mission organized a two day workshop on how best to tame the illicit act and give every child the right sense of belonging.
The 2- day workshop held on the 27th & 28th February, 2019 at Grand Serene Hotel Iyaganku Ibadan was attended by security agencies the likes of Nigerian Immigration Service( NIS), Nigerian Police Force ( NPF), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps( NSCDC), Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, Child Protection Network( CPN), Federation of Women Lawyers( FIFA), Nigerian Union of Journalists( NUJ), Nigerian Medical Association( NMA), Medical Women Association of Nigeria( MWAN), Justice Development and Peace Commission( JDPC) among others.
The stakeholders maintained that there should be an end to discrimination against victims or survivors of Gender Based Violence through inappropriate use of words and languages in media reports.
“The media have a major role to play in the reduction of GBV in the state, through various programs and news reportage. NDLEA must swing into action on the issue of illicit use of drugs in the society especially those selling them as this has been identified to be contributory to the menace of GBV in all it forms".
"The state government must fund the family court to ensure that judicial activities commences immediately, as same has proved to be another factor that can help to reduce the GBV menace in the society.”
However Oyo state Chairperson, (NAWOJ), Comrade Jadesola Ajibola on urged journalists in the state to rise up and join in the crusade to end harmful practices against women and children.
She stressed that as relevant stakeholders who at different times and situation knew and understood the place of Gender-Based Violence either by personal and or borrowed experiences, “Oyo NAWOJ Executive realized the need to supports partners to develop and implement the required legal and policy frameworks to combat gender-based violence, through media reportage by bringing stakeholders together on gender issues.”
Also, the Oyo state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Adewumi Faniran appealed to the relevant bodies and the stakeholders not to relent in their efforts at stemming Gender Based Violence in our society.
