FG committed to addressing unemployment with Tech - Dipeolu

The Economic Adviser to the President, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, has disclosed that the Federal Government is leveraging on technology and innovations with policies to drive inclusive economic growth, in addressing unemployment challenges in Nigeria.

Dipeolu who said this in Ibadan at a two-day policy dialogue on job creation in Nigeria, added that the  provision of enabling environment to encourage youths engagement in tackling the menace of  unemployment would also be addressed.

The Economic Adviser also mentioned that the government is interested in opening doors of opportunities for Nigerians through technical cooperation with international leaders across the globe.

He said this would be encouraged to ensuring that professionals as well as creative minds are able to access latest technologies, innovations and opportunities. 

The Two day policy dialogue on Job creation was organised by  Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy( ISGPP) with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa ( UNECA) and the Officer of the Vice President ( OVP) in Ibadan on 17th - 18th July 2018.

The Chairman of ISGPP and keynote speaker, Prof. Ademola Oyeyide, stated that the nation's economy growth process is not employment- intensive.

Oyeyide said, the process not being employment- intensive has not been able to generate enough jobs to meet the demand of the county's growing labour force.

On his part, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,Dr. Obadiah Mailafia noted that unemployment is a tragedy of monumental problem. 

In an address, the executive vice chairman, Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy  (ISGPP) said that job creation on a massive scale is the solution to economic problem of Nigeria.

"Part of our findings from our study shows that weak policy conceptualisation, management, implementation, and evaluation are at the core of perennial challenge of youth unemployment in Nigeria".

"The aim of the dialogue is to build on previous conversations in and around government, to highlight Nigeria's youth unemployment challenges, and also to know what Nigeria government is doing to tackle the menace of unemployment and the role of the private sector in job creation" .

" Statistics shows that Nigeria working age population is growing rapidly and will continue to grow over the next 20years, but our labour and capital markets must also be ready for this change in the population age structure, failure to absorb the large working age population into productive, formal sector employment can cause danger and aggressive which can hindered job creation and youth employment ".


While highlighting the effort of the ISGPP towards creation of job opportunities for Nigeria youths and young graduate, Olaopa said the aim of the ISGPP is to strength end the whole effort through action and policy research, leveraging on think tank, the Public Policy Group, and series of seminar to raise bar of national discourse and deepen inputsvto national policy, and deployment of expertise to strengthen implementation for reassuring policy outcome
