Oyo CJ releases 30 inmates from Agodi prison

Chief Judge (CJ) of Oyo State, Justice Muntar Abimbola, released 30 inmates from Agodi prison, Ibadan.

The Chief Judge during his visit granted amnesty to two female and 28 male inmates on Tuesday in Ibadan.

He said one of the released prisoners was pardoned based on legal advice, while another prisoner would be relocated to a remand home where to be rehabilitated.

He added that three others, who were still being tried, were released from the facility to continue their trial from home.

The amnesty, according to the CJ, was in exercise of his powers to visit prisons and see how proceedings and trial of inmates had been going, stressing that such would help to decongest prisons.

He said, “It is important and essential for us to visit prisons, not necessarily to decongest them, but to ensure that inmates are given speedy trials.

“The power to decongest prison is not at our whims and caprices.

“This visit is in exercise of a statutory provision to get inmates speedy trials and get prisons decongested.”
