Communication skills learning, a way-out of domestic violence - Expert



The founding chairman, Alternative Dispute Resolution Society, Nigeria(ADR),  Chief Kole Ojo has disclosed that when people learn skills that can de-escalate violence and improve communication, the rate of domestic violence in Nigeria will reduce significantly.

While intereacting with newsmen on Sunday in Ibadan, chief Ojo identified prolonged angry speech of accusations as the root of many domestic violence in the Nigerian family settings.

According to him" Many domestic violence starts first by verbal tirades and negative habits and this is where the Alternative Dispute Resolution comes in, through ADR people will learn skills that can de-escalate violence and improve communication".

He disclosed that alternative dispute resolution is a tool for getting access to justice and manage disputes amicably. " we organise lectures, symposia, conferences, talks and open days to deliver a wide range of dispute resolution practical".

He encouraged people to try and engage on peaceful communication skills and drive dispute out of court into the alternative dispute resolution forum.

Mr Ojo also commended the support given by the Oyo State Government towards the enactment of the law and ongoing construction of the Multi Door Courts and the ADR centre at the high court of justice.

Speaking about the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society of Nigeria, he said" It is the first and leading professional network of those involved in the dispute resolution services with the mission to educate, network and resolve".

He added that " the ADR society was designed to facilitate an opportunity for lawyers, family and business people in Ibadan to network and discuss the opportunities that a new thinking of dispute resolution brings, the frustration of lawyer and clients in the changing landscape of access to justice and expectations".
